Alloy, metallic substance composed of two or more elements, as either a compound or a solution. The components of alloys are ordinarily themselves metals, though carbon, a nonmetal, is an essential constituent of steel.
Alloy features
(1) The melting point of most alloys is lower than that of any of its constituent metals;
(2) the hardness is generally greater than that of any metal in its components; (Exception: sodium-potassium alloy is liquid and is used as a heat conductor in atomic reactors.)
(3) The electrical and thermal conductivity of the alloy is lower than that of any other component metal. Using this property of alloys, high resistance and high thermal resistance materials can be made. It can also make materials with special properties.
(4) some strong corrosion resistance (such as stainless steel) such as in iron mixed with 15% chromium and 9% nickel to get a corrosion resistant stainless steel, suitable for chemical industry.
